How long does cataract surgery take?

Surgery takes about 10 to 20 minutes. After surgery, you will relax in a recovery room and need to arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure. Depending on which surgical option you choose, you may be able to have both eyes treated on the same day to ensure quicker recovery time.

What is recovery like after cataract surgery?

Most patients experience quick recovery and progressive vision improvement in the days following surgery. Although you will be able to see after surgery, your vision will be blurry during the initial recovery period. It is recommended that patients rest after surgery.
After surgery, you will be given a clear protective shield over the eye and/or sunglasses. You will not be able to drive yourself home and must have a friend or family member with you.
Prior to leaving the office, your ophthalmologist will review the proper use of the prescribed eye drops and confirm the time of your follow-up exam. Expect to use the eye drops for several weeks to aid recovery, reduce the chance of infection, and keep your eyes lubricated.

How is RLE surgery different from cataract surgery?

They are essentially the same surgical procedure in that the natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced by an artificial lens, however RLE features today’s latest intraocular lens (IOL) technologies such as extended depth of focus IOL, multifocal IOL, and trifocal IOL. By replacing the patient’s natural lens with one of these advanced IOL options, patients may achieve visual independence from glasses or contacts after the procedure and an improved quality of life.

Is EVO ICL right for me?

Ideal candidates for EVO ICL are aged 21 to 45 with nearsightedness with or without astigmatism and have maintained a stable prescription for at least one year. Currently, EVO ICL is approved only for these conditions and is not yet available for farsightedness.

Am I a candidate for SMILE laser vision correction procedure?

You may be a candidate for SMILE if you:

  • Are at least 21 years old
  • Have a prescription that has remained stable for at least 12 months
  • Have nearsightedness (myopia) or astigmatism
  • Do not have pre-existing conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, or dry eye syndrome
  • Have a healthy cornea
  • Have an active lifestyle and need to return to work and activities within 24–48 hours

You are not currently a candidate if you:

  • Are pregnant or nursing – it is generally recommended you do not have SMILE until you have completed nursing for three to six months
  • Are receiving hormonal therapy – your doctor can review your medical history with you to determine your eligibility for SMILE and other vision correction options
